Two for Joy starring Daniel Mays, Billie Piper, and Samantha Morton premiered last evening at the 72nd Annual Edinburgh Film Fest. We are already hearing great things from the premiere screening!
Two For Joy –
Vi has been forced to grow up fast; mother-daughter roles are reversed, Vi is Aisha’s carer as well as trying to control her rascal younger brother Troy, who with no father figure and a struggling mother, is a law unto himself – something must give, the situation must change.
TWO FOR JOY has been conceived and developed over the last six years through a series of short films and photo projects by Tom Beard. It’ll be a bold, unique and distinct departure from your classical social-realist film, while un-voyeuristically exploring and bringing into the public eye the consequence of some serious, British, topical themes that are often short-changed by the government, and under-represented on our screens.
It was announced today that Two For Joy directed by Tom Beard and starring Daniel Mays, Billie Piper, Sam Morton, and others will have its UK premiere at the Edinburgh Film Fest on 23 & 24 June as part of the Best of British Strand.
A powerful coming-of-age drama about a sister and younger brother who must care for their troubled mother (a moving performance by Samantha Morton) as their relationship reaches critical mass. The debut feature of writer-director Tom Beard (director of music videos for FKA twigs and Florence and the Machine), Two for Joy looks at Britain through the eyes of a family in crisis and deals with issues of mental illness, marginalised communities and national identity. Also stars Billie Piper, Daniel Mays, and Bella Ramsey (Game of Thrones).
Tickets are currently on sale to members and then to the general public on Friday 25 May at 10AM.
Daniel Mays announced today that he has joined the cast of Tom Beard’s feature film directorial debut “Two for Joy“. Daniel portrays Lias and joins previously announced cast Billie Piper, Samantha Morton, Emilia Jones, Bella Ramsey, and Badger Skelton.
“Two For Joy is a British drama that explores heart breaking themes with immense humanity and sympathy, to deliver an insightful and poignant impact,” Blonde To Black Pictures told Screen.
“For the past few years we’ve been steadily working with Tom Beard towards realising his debut feature, mentoring and watching him grow as a writer and director. We undertook development of the film after co-producing his last short Rags with Michael Wiggs of Size 9 Productions.”
Writer-director Tom Beard added: “Two For Joy encompasses my professional development over the last six years. In that time I have worked closely with young people who have been through the care system with the drama therapy charity The Big House. This has given me a unique perspective on issues affecting them, issues that I hope to offer up an unbiased and profound representation of in this film.”
Rags is a story of abuse and adulteration, told through the fleeting repressed memories of a teenage mother. Skipping backwards and forwards through time, we unravel the dark revelations of grooming and sexual abuse in her past at the hands of the very person who was meant to protect her.
